Rules of Knockout Whist

Knockout Whist is a trick-taking game played in up to seven rounds. If a player fails to win any trick in a round, the player is knocked out and eliminated from the game. The goal is to be the last player remaining in the game.

Setup

The game is played with the standard 52-card deck. In the first round, each player is dealt 7 cards. In each subsequent round, one less card per player is dealt, so 6 cards per player in round 2, 5 cards per player in round 3, etc., and down to 1 card per player in round 7. The remaining cards that are not dealt are removed from play for that round.

Game Play

At the beginning of each round right after the cards are dealt, one of the four suits is chosen to be the trump suit for the round. In the first round, the trump suit is chosen randomly. And in every subsequent round, the trump suit is selected by the winner of the previous round.

The first player chooses one of their cards to start a trick. The suit of this card is called the leading suit.

Each of the remaining players must follow suit by adding one card of the same suit to the trick. The only exception is when a player does not have a card with the leading suit, in which case the player can play any card in their hand.

The player who plays the highest card with the trump suit wins the trick. If no one plays the trump suit, the player who plays the highest card with the leading suit wins the trick. The player who wins the trick then starts the next trick.

The ranks from high to low are A K Q J 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2.

The round continues until every card has been played. Players who win at least one trick in the round advance to the next round. The player who wins the most tricks in the round gets to select the trump suit for the next round. If multiple people tie for the most tricks, one of them is randomly chosen to select the trump suit.

When there is only one player remaining, that player wins the game.
